In our African Drumming unit, students will use the drums to play different rhythm patterns during the re-telling of folktales and the singing of folksongs. They will play complimentary rhythm patterns in small groups and create rhythm bands with classmates. Having these Remo tubano drums will allow my students to participate in an authentic drum circle while performing and improvising rhythm patterns. Drumming will give them an opportunity to accompany themselves while singing songs from Latin America and Africa, connecting music with cultures from around the world. Drum circles create classroom community and allow for each student to play a part in an ensemble, valuing each music maker in the process. Using multicultural music and instruments in the classroom will not only grow student's musical abilities, but will give students a better understanding of people and cultures from around the world.
