My students are coming into school this year with no reading textbooks! Our district advised us to design our own lessons using children's literature and create learning experiences around these books. In the Scholastic News weekly readers my students will be able to see up close pictures and hear news from around the world. Last year, my school was able to fund the Scholastic News readers for the students and they LOVED them. This year the school cannot fund that subscription, but my students need them now more then ever! With these readers we can practice reading, have social studies/cultural lessons, and dive into science topics. With a Scholastic News subscription my class would then also have access to the Scholastic News website that would provide even more resources for the students using our SmartBoard technology. With the Listening and Fun Book center, I will be able to provide a listening center for the students with books that they are interested in and can follow along with. Listening to reading is always a class favorite and allows students to learn new vocabulary and reading skills at their own pace. With books like A Bad Case of Stripes, Sheila Rae the Brave, Chester's Way, and the other listed books I will be able to create lessons that focus on phonological awareness, comprehension, and fluency. The students will enjoy learning through these books and look forward to the next lesson! All the listed books are part of the Rooted in Reading program specifically designed for 2nd grade students that I will be implementing in our room this year.
