Often times in a home the kitchen table is where ideas are shared, days are discussed, and connections are made. For many students, this is an experience that they are not accustomed to due to busy lives, hectic schedules, or a shift in priorities. With table-centered instruction, I am hoping to bring to the classroom a family-like learning environment as the kitchen table does to many homes. The table will serve as a gathering place where students will communicate with each other, build relationships, and grow as learners. It is imperative that I meet with my third graders in both reading and math instruction. The kidney table will provide me with the opportunity to meet with my students in small groups often throughout the day. The students will also be able to work in cooperative learning groups on projects that involve research, STEAM, and other small group activities.
