Flexible seating provides numerous opportunities for students to get up, move around, find a new area in the room for perspective and also communicate with peers that they may have never communicated with before. I have seen a noticeable difference after creating my own flexible seating out of milk crates and cushions. I hope that I can go a step further by providing a cafe-like environment in the back of my room for students to work independently or with partners. We are past the time when students need to sit in an uncomfortable chair for eight hours a day to learn. I think that by providing autonomy for students, we can make students excited about learning and foster that learning as they continue to grow into high schoolers and college students.
We, as teachers, have a huge responsibility to make education not only worthwhile but also fun. When students grow older, they can take that with them and hopefully carry that enthusiasm into the workplace, or into their future children.
