Research shows that when students are provided opportunities to stand, stretch and move around, they are more focused and better able to learn. As adults, don't we like to feel comfortable when WE work? First graders are always on the go-- and as a teacher I view this as a positive thing. My classroom's academic routines are based on a "workshop" model, which encourages the students to work around the room rather than stay stationary at their desk or in a hard chair for long periods of time. I would love to provide my students with more flexible seating options when they work around the room. Six wobble chairs would allow my small group students to work and focus on a lesson at a table, but still be able to get their "wiggles" out. Bean bag chairs and soft, durable pillows would give students additional safe, comfortable options for working around the room. Providing my students with flexible seating will enable them to move, work comfortably, and promote safe, healthy learning.
