After reading their first novel in my class, students will write three personal vignettes, or a triptych, with a common theme in the style of Sandra Cisneros’ The House on Mango Street. The common theme that connects the vignettes together can be thematic subject matter, setting, figurative language use, etc. Whatever they choose, the common thread that connects the vignettes should be clear to the reader. For students with learning differences or low writing proficiency, they may participate in this triptych by writing two personal vignettes and drawing/creating one art piece that ties the pieces together by using one common thread.
