One of the larger skills students need is critical thinking, and this stems from an ability to critical analyze literature or any text they encounter. One method I use to teach this is to have students annotate the texts they read - from articles, to novels, to poems, to textbooks. In my class, we call annotating the "Two Qs." In this approach, students mark Questions they have from reading as well as any Quotes or key passages they found important. For evolving readers and learners, this is most easily done by having different colored flags to distinguish between the two.
