Our classroom carpet is one of our most vital tools, and is used a great deal throughout our day. The carpet provides my students with a comfortable, inviting, structured area to learn together. The carpet also strengthens routines and boundaries during our learning time. It provides each student with personal space, which encourages respect for others and enhances focus. Each day, my students gather as a large group on the carpet for circle time. During this time, my students greet one another, share ideas, sing songs, listen to stories, collaborate in group activities, and participate in activities that teach and reinforce important concepts and skills. We also end our day at the carpet as a group, where we reflect on the day and say goodbye to one another. Small group activities and SmartBoard lessons also take place at the carpet. Unfortunately, the carpet we are currently using, has seen better days. It does not comfortably fit all students. Often times, my students are squished and have difficulties keeping their hands and feet to themselves. The new carpet will have plenty of designated spaces for each student to comfortably sit which will help my little preschoolers learn personal space and allow them to successfully participate in circle time. The carpet also has colors, letters, and numbers that can be used to teach these concepts as we are learning about them.
