These 44 copies of Auggie and Me will be used by guided reading groups and book clubs to support our students' understanding of theme and character in literature. We used Wonder as our first quarter read aloud, and students at every level of reading proficiency were hooked. Kids who professed to hate reading and who find it challenging to maintain the focus needed to complete a novel checked this one out from the library so they could read ahead. Students who are reluctant to participate in class conversations eagerly raised their hands to share their thoughts and make predictions about what would happen with the characters as the events of the story unfolded. Wonder is a rich text that not only allows us to teach grade level standards in an engaging format, it also provides many opportunities to teach aspects of character education, such as empathy, compassion, and kindness towards all.
As we move into our work analyzing theme in terms of how characters in literature respond to challenges, we need high quality texts that students are motivated to read and complete. This set of three stories that revisit the characters and events in Wonder will not only help us accomplish our academic goals, it will help build a life long love of reading in all of our students.
