We need rainbow bar fraction sets, ten frame sets, student clocks fraction cubes and storage. Using fraction strips is a must when teaching students equivalent fractions. A fraction is a difficult concept to grasp, which is why having the strips, will give them a better understanding of the concept. They will see how 1/2, 1/4, and 4/8 take up the same space. Manipulatives are a big part of teaching mathematical concepts, especially in the special needs classroom. My students need to touch, hear, and see examples of the concepts they are learning so they can better understand them. Learning about time for example can be challenging but using the small clocks to move the hands around and show how many minutes have passed helps them see what the meaning of 4:30 actually is. Oftentimes, children are asked to draw arrays or to show two different ways to solve problems. The two color counters can be an excellent tool to show how the same array can be switched around to represent the same product I have a bridge class with second and third grade students; some of the concepts I teach need to be constantly reinforced to reach those students that more difficulty or learn at a different pace.
