In general, hands-on, inquiry based, small group activities in which students physically interact with the knowledge they are acquiring is my preferred pedagogy. For this unit, the Spheros are an essential material. The alternative would be to have each individual student experiment and work with software simulated robots and borrowing a single robot to primarily be used for demonstrations conducted by the instructor rather and shared amongst 25-28 students. Having one Sphero for groups of three to four students will promote an enhanced learning environment in which students benefit from the advantages associated with working in small groups and physically interacting with content in a real-world setting. These advantages include augmented development of critical thinking and communication skills, a deeper understanding of content/concepts, improved long-term retention of knowledge acquired, and increased student motivation and engagement In short, the best way for my students learn about robotics is by using robots.
