For 15 years, I have taught at J.W. Wakeman School in Jersey City, one of approximately 30 Abbott Districts in NJ. In that time, I have tried to introduce my students to literary classics that they would otherwise have not encountered for many years, if at all. I typically read aloud from one these classics then lead a discussion relating to the materials. I know that my students’ learning outcomes would be significantly improved if each student were able to read along with me from their own copy. While I’ve purchased, with my own funds, the copy from which I read, I unfortunately have not had sufficient resources to purchase a copy for each of my students. I teach a third-grade “Gifted and Talented” class of 24 students. In years past, I began reading to my students from the literary classic, Homer’s Odyssey. Recently, several students asked whether they could have their own copy to read. I am requesting 24 copies of the two-volume edition of the Odyssey so that each of my students will have their own copy and future students will enjoy a similar experience. Students would unquestionably achieve better learning outcomes if they could read along with their own copies. The assistance of Donors Choose will make a material impact in the learning outcomes of each of my students. They will be engaged while reading independently in the classroom and at home. We can move through the materials at a faster pace allowing more time for critical discussion and analysis, including student-led group discussions. One of my goals is to eventually secure sufficient financial support to build a library of classics for my students so that I can continue to introduce them to great authors and works of literature. Naturally, I would start this collection with Homer.
