Our students struggle with making connections to the text they are reading. Because so many of them are not fluent in their reading, and their proficiency levels are not where they should be, they feel overwhelmed by the task at hand. Many of them simply do not have the experiences or background knowledge about what they are reading. When this occurs, there is a disconnect. The products I have chosen will help them with making that connection and assisting them to read at a deeper level. The clips will give the students a tactile reminder to go back and evaluate the text, giving them an opportunity to discuss with others why that particular part was confusing, or why that piece of text was interesting. It will definitely open the students minds and encourage dialogue their peers. I have also asked for Scholastic, which is of high interest to the students. Because the stories are of high interest, the students are very interested in learning about many different subject matters. The Expo markers will be used in different ways. Students use them with whiteboards for responses during class and to analyze texts.
