This project centers around "mentor texts" (quality children's literature) which inspires the children to become better people. Many of the books focus on friendship, character, and being who you were created to be. Mentor texts motivate students to become lifelong readers. These books were specifically selected because they are meaningful. Young children can relate to them and learn from them. Students will respond to these texts as they are learning to become writers and illustrators. These books are multi-faceted in their content. Therefore, they lead to lively discussions about reading and writing. This year, I am working closely with two other Kindergarten teachers. We plan to read these mentor texts to all of our students and share their writing with each other's classes. Our desire is to truly create a community of readers and writers.
