As a teacher of gifted students, I am committed to providing every opportunity for my students to think critically in order to create the problem solvers and future leaders of tomorrow. Civics is placed on the back burner in this day of high stakes testing in math and language arts. In my opinion, a strong understanding of civics is extremely important. During this important election year, I can't think of a better time to teach my bright and motivated students about the importance of civics and about politics, while helping them to gain an understanding of their precious rights and responsibilities as Americans, and their ability to make a positive difference in their community and in the world. We are requesting TIME for Kids and election workbooks to gain an understanding of civics, the three branches of government, and the importance of the presidential election process. Having digital and print access to magazines that inform and explain about the election process and about current events will be an incredible teaching tool in my classroom. It is my intention to teach language arts and reading comprehension skills through my students' civics learning.
