Last year was my first year teaching environmental science and I had this feeling of hypocrisy of not having read Silient Spring. So I decided to remedy the situation. As I began to read it I began to find that this book could really impact the learning of my students. Ms. Carson's description and discussion of environmental issues regarding insecticides and herbicides is written for everyone to understand. She questioned the obsession of human control over nature and prolific use of chemicals against nature. She also challenged the perception that chemicals can be grossly applied to environments with no consequences. My students need these books in order to bring awareness to human impacts of the environment and to build an appreciation for the environment around them.
