It is absolutely essential for students to make connections to the books they read and listen to read aloud. How can students do so if they rarely or never see themselves reflected in the books they see at school? My classroom is in need of a collection of literature and non-fiction titles with a diverse representation of the people in the real world. Students need to see themselves within the pages of books in order to fully connect. Additionally, having books with characters and people from a wide range of diverse backgrounds will help to reduce learned stereotypes and highlight commonalities.
