The average student in my classroom does not read independently. I chose these classroom materials, a subscription to TIME For Kids and a Storyworks text set, to help increase reading engagement inside and outside of my classroom. Students can easily use these within my classroom and take them home for further analysis during homework. These classroom magazine reading materials will allow for further opportunities for my students to read independently in my classroom and develop their vocabulary and reading fluency. As a result of these resources, students will build their understanding of important current events and have repeated exposure to various short story structures and poetry. Students will be able to use these materials to complete educational activities to meet the common core standards at the sixth grade level. The TIME For Kids classroom magazines also have an online component, which will increase student engagement. I will also use these materials as a starting point to allow for independent research opportunities.
