Albert Einstein said it best: "Play is the highest form of research." In early education, play is crucial to social and emotional learning. When my transitional kindergarten students are engaged in play, it is so fascinating to watch them learn on their own and from each other. Although it may seem like they are just playing, when you watch them closely, you will see them discussing, negotiating, strategizing, taking turns, and creating elaborate play scenes. Through play, children develop skills that they will use in their later school years as well as in everyday life. My students need a dramatic play area, in particular a play kitchen, to help encourage this type of learning.
