Students learn best when engaged in meaningful learning experiences. The materials selected will give the students the opportunity to work in small homogeneous literacy and math groups to strengthen skills necessary for success in 2nd grade and beyond. Students will use the composition books construction paper, crayons, markers, scissors and glue to create interactive notebooks to use as tools to help organize and process the information taught in class. Interactive notebooks enable students to be creative, independent thinkers, and writers.
Students that are engaged in meaningful learning activities are less likely to misbehave or disrupt the classroom environment because they are focused on kinesthetic activities that require their full attention. Increasing students' time in the classroom leads to more learning and higher achievement. Hands-on learning activities also give students the chance to develop positive social interaction skills and problem solving skills.
