I am an ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) teacher working in Michigan. This means that I work in a self-contained classroom of 6 students who are highly impacted by their autism. My students have many sensory, emotional, cognitive, and social needs that are addressed daily in the classroom. We also focus on teaching academic subjects just like any general education classroom. My students work hard everyday to overcome obstacles within themselves that we could never imagine. Their brains process information and stimuli different than students without autism, so in our classroom we learn things differently. We practice often, take breaks often, and move our bodies constantly throughout the day. Our classroom is full of noises and activities that help us focus and learn as well as calm ourselves down. No two students with autism are the same and our classroom proves this every second of every minute of every day.
