We spend a lot of time at the beginning of the year really building the idea of family and community within our classroom. As a school and neighborhood affected by Hurricane Harvey, we've had many students displaced and unable to be in their homes. School is one of the only places these students feel a strong sense of normalcy and comfort. One way we build community best is by thinking of our environment as less like being in a classroom and more like being in a home. This helps our kiddos feel comfortable and helps them be more engaged with their learning and peers. With recliners, pillows, and a futon, students can sit and feel more comfortable not only with their learning, but also with each other. They can have a choice as to where they sit and who they sit with each day. They can move around and get to know each other more. Students will get to experience learning in a different and more relaxed way, while still building their knowledge and family of learners.
