As a coach, I taught my students how to play soccer without goals or a field. With a school population of almost 1,800, our team had students at different levels and some with no experience at all. Soccer goals are a resource that should be available to every kid, especially at school. Our students are passionate and dedicated. Their families are supportive and understanding. We do our best with what we have, but I want to fight for more. I hope that someone can relate to my students and understand what a disservice this is to them. Someone who has a passion for athletics and understands how important these resources are for our kids. When we serve a community that is so passionate about a sport but are unable to provide them with the most basic necessities at their local school, it's disheartening. I imagine my students being able to try out for their soccer team and truly learn how to play the game. I also see these soccer goals being used by our P.E. teachers to support their curriculum. This is something we haven't been able to do for years, but this is something I am determined to change. As a community, I believe we can get these resources. As a school, our teachers fight hard for our kids. We fight for resources knowing we can't change it all by tomorrow. I told my students I would advocate for them, that I would be their voice. But as the saying goes, it takes a village.
