The students will be able to annotate their personal copy of the book with full sentence annotations about characterization, theme, setting, symbolism, etc. Also, this novel will prepare 7th graders for more rigorous reading in AP (advanced placement) classes in 9th-12th grade. Students do not usually have their own books, so they rely on sticky notes or taking notes on separate sheets of paper. Having their own books will help them make connections between their reading and their ideas about their reading. It is these connections that improve reading level and promote a love of reading in most gifted students.
