By mid-October last year, my students created so much buzz in our school community that I had everyone from janitors to the principal asked to join our class and participate in our labs. When we began our unit on kinematics, the study of motion, students excitedly asked me if we could learn about explosives and fast-moving objects like planes and cars. I did some thinking and designed a project that would connect our unit on velocity, acceleration and kinematic graphs to model rockets, an age-old science demonstration with a wealth of physics concepts to explore. Our model rocket project was one of the most engaging and effective learning experiences we shared last year. I am working to secure the funds to make it happen again this year. My students thrive when they have access to the materials and lab equipment to complete science projects on their terms. Firing rockets was just the beginning of an exciting year of building, testing, collecting data and making sense of new experiences. With the funds made available through the generosity of donors, my students will be able to build, launch, and analyze model rockets using rigorous scientific techniques. It will build their confidence and set them on a trajectory to finish high school ready to practice science for the rest of their lives.
