Students need to be empowered to make choices about their learning. One of these choices should be about how and where to sit for their maximum comfort and ability to focus. My students need alternative seating options so that they can practice making choices for themselves and their learning. Not all students function best when sitting at a desk. Not all students can sit still for long periods of time. We need stools, stability balls, lap desks and rugs so that every student can have their needs regarding movement and concentration met. Research has shown many advantages to student choice in seating and flexible seating options. For example, student engagement and attention increases. Also, students are able to release excess energy by standing to work or using a stability ball. When students can easily rearrange their seating (i.e. bring stools together) they can collaborate more easily. This is significant since collaboration is a key skill in the "real world." Students who are given the opportunity to make choices about their learning become stronger problem solvers. They also develop a sense of metacognition when they find out how they learn best.
