I am working to transform my classroom in an effort to make their learning spaces more student-centered by offering my students flexible seating this year. Flexible seating gives students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, and helps them to work together, communicate, and engage in critical thinking. Studies show that this type of learning environment leads to: better grades, more engaged students, happier students, and more participation. Instead of forcing my second grade students to work at their desks I have started gathering supplies to make our work space more student-centered! I have lowered tables, but we need mats to sit on to work at the lowered tables. I painted a class set of clipboards so students can work all over the room. I would like a set of yoga balls for my wiggly students to sit in while they work. I borrowed some desks from our older grades and raised them to create standing tables. Your help in transforming our work space is greatly appreciated!
