Having a central location for students and teachers to gather together is an essential component to building a safe and welcoming classroom community. When students gather at the carpet they know there are specific expectations that everyone follows in order to accomplish a variety of goals such as participating in a mini-lesson, playing a morning meeting activity, or having a class problem solving meeting. A classroom rug also provides a comfortable and alternative place for students to participate in small group or independent reading activities. Desks and tables are important pieces of furniture for a classroom, but having other options available helps increase student engagement and learning.
