Students learn to be great writers by reading books by great writers. Mentor texts provide examples of exemplary writing in a variety of styles. Introductory hooks, closing paragraphs, varied sentence beginnings, effective use of word choice and strong writing are all present in the mentor texts that I've chosen to use with my students. These mentor texts will help me teach the common core writing standards to my 2nd grade students and help them love to write. I use a variety of songs, movement and chants in my classroom to help kids stay engaged in their learning. These books will give me a springboard for teaching the writing skills necessary and add balance to my teaching style.
