Two of my favorites words in Education are "Create it." As a proponent of the maker movement in education, I have worked over the past few years to include designing, building, and creating a normal part of my classroom. Additionally, I am a believer that learning is and should be fun! Who says playing can't be learning? Legos, combined my loves of fun, learning, and making in the classroom. Who wouldn't want to learn while playing with Legos? Incorporating Legos into the classroom helps fuel student engagement, encourage building and designing, and develops higher-order thinking through creating in a new format. Legos can be used in any academic area. As a 5th grade teacher, I teach all subjects. In science, students could build a biome, construct a molecule, or create a plant/animal cell. In Literacy, students could reconstruct a scene from a novel, build a plot diagram, or create a 3-D biography. The possibilities are limitless. This project will lay the foundation of our Lego collection. I plan on personally adding more Legos, sets, and figures to our collection throughout the years. This foundation project will set the stage for creative thinking for students now and for years and years to come.
