The Hate You Give is an important novel which addresses serious and timely issues such as racism and police violence. My students are living in a very small-town in the middle of rural America, and it's easy for them to feel removed from these problems. Reading this novel would encourage them to consider life in someone else's shoes and help them gain a new perspective. Our study of the novel in AP English would also include studying the poetry of Langston Hughes and the writings of Tupac Shakur. We would also compare this novel to the classic Catcher in the Rye.
