A huge part of teaching tolerance is ensuring students don't forget the past, and the hard fought battles that came before us. Using a graphic novel to keep students interest up, John Lewis has created a beautiful recount of the civil rights movement. The story uses true events and real lives to shape the plot and conflict, giving students an inside account of what is what like to be a minority, an outside, and an immigrant in our country. I want students to use this text as a launch point for conversations on culture, identity, and inequity in the present day. My students have their own stories to share, and capturing those in their journals will give them the confidence they need to write and speak with truth. There is still much to fight when it comes to inequities, and our students are on the front lines of those battles. Giving them the chance to speak their minds while learning how progress was made beforehand will empower my students - and given present circumstances, they need all the power we can give them.
