With a class set of August Wilsons award winning play, my students will be able to vicariously experience, empathize, and connect to many social justice issues that still affect people today. Students will be able to connect to the character, situations and emotions and help them create their own voice and opinions regarding topics such as racism, feminism, classism and parenting. For students who are often disengaged from school because of lack of interest and connection with the text, reading this play will allow them to build passion for literature and the creative arts. As a final project, students will be able to preform this play for the school community to bring to light the issue they have learned but also share the work of contemporary authors of color like August Wilson.
