My first grade students have become engulfed with the world around them this year through the magic of science. We have explored books, the outdoors, and science technology. Their spark in science interest has blown me away, specifically in the areas of animals and caring for the environment. Having hands-on experience through the use of the Butterflies in the Classroom Kit would give my kids a new excitement for learning and increase their interest in animal science. We will watch the animals grow, discuss the various steps of the life cycle, make predictions, track and discuss different types of butterflies from all around the world, talk about what they eat and how to care for animals, and then eventually let the butterflies go out into the world and learn their way of life. Just like the minds of my little ones will have to do someday too. My students need this project to connect what we have discussed in books, and watched in videos, to real life experience. It would be beneficial for them to connect emotionally with the butterflies through caring for them and interact with them daily. My class and I are so excited about this idea and look forward to putting it into action.
