Because we are a Title 1 school, teachers and schools are expected to provide school supplies. Organization is increasingly essential as students in sixth grade prepare for middle school / Jr. High. Last year, we used a colored folder system to separate subjects and many students struggled with organizing their work. This year we are going to have students use 2 inch 3 ring binders which will help them better keep track of all of their work. In addition to organizing their work, the binders will be useful in helping students track their own learning. For each separate subject in the binder, data sheets will allow students to evaluate their own progress in meeting learning targets. Zipper pouches for pencils will be used in the binders to facilitate organization, and because all student work will be concentrated in one place, plastic homework folders will be needed so students can work at home without having to take home their entire binder. Using the binders, pencil pouches, and homework folders will help them have a successful year academically and provide them with organizational skills they can learn as they continue into secondary education.
