In a cross-curricular course between history and English, students will explore how power affected the lives of millions during the Holocaust. They will then compare dystopian novels to the Holocaust through concepts such as choiceless choices, placing too much power into the hands of a few people, and allowing the increase of technology to go unmonitored. Students will identify with younger protagonists in a novel of choice, engaging in conversations that are relevant to their lives and the world in which they live today as they connect to history. Taking part in several group discussions and keeping a digital journal of ideas throughout the novel will encourage students to think critically about the author's intent presented in the novel and how it is applicable to them personally. Discussions also allow students to consider how events as the Holocaust could take place without fully understanding how to avoid such dictatorships in the future through democracy and using one's voice. Several unit projects also allow those students who are more visual to express ideas. Students explore how plot and hero's journey are interrelated by mapping out essential literary elements throughout the novel. They use textual evidence to help explain ideas, preparing them for future essays, and create cross-curricular projects where they must connect ideas regarding what the Jews faced during the Holocaust and what their protagonist faces in the novel. Other ideas, such as propaganda, its benefits and potential dangers, are also explored, as students connect ideas to media in society today. This project allows students to connect to history in a way that feels relevant to them as they also learn the important elements of any story. Students are able to read novels that interest them and keep them engaged throughout class discussions and projects.
