Does music enhance student learning? My students will benefit from these donations because a great deal of research suggest that providing kids with opportunities to connect with music as both listeners and performers can greatly benefit their mental skills. The rhythm instruments such as djembes (large hand drums), the rhythm sets and instruments will be used to teach children to read, play and create rhythms. The glockenspiel (xylophone) and the soprano recorders (flute-like instruments) are used to play melodies. The science of neuroplasticity suggests our brain can change and increase our intelligence as we continue to learn new things. As children sing, play instruments and listen to music, many parts of the brain are engaged. The motor systems in the brain (gross and fine movements) produce sounds processed in the auditory circuitry. Sensory information from fingers, hands and arms is sent to the brain. Visual information sent to the brain interprets commands for the motor centers. “Dartmouth music psychologist Petr Janata published research in the journal Science where he confirmed that music has a greater effect than any other stimulus to enhance connections between the brains right and left hemispheres, as well as the areas where memories and emotions develop”. Can it be said that music has a positive influence on a person's intelligence? The answer is a definite "Yes". Making music matters! It improves our lives for the better. The brain processes emotional responses to the music. “Hey, look at all the instruments. I can’t wait to play. I get the drum!” These are some of the comments I expect to hear play from my students as they walk into the music classroom. Thank you so very much for your donation. Not only are you helping our students to enjoy making music, you are helping their brains to grow!
