The use of calculators is almost a daily activity in my classroom. Even though calculators are on the school supplies list, most of my students cannot afford or do not buy a calculator for class. I usually pick up a classroom set of cheap calculators for them to use during the year. What becomes a problem is the fact that the basic $1 calculators never seem to last due to frequent use. Students often have to get up to get a new calculator because the one they are using stops working. In addition, students are expected to use TI-30XS calculators on their ISTEP+ test. By having these TI-30 calculators, my students will be able to avoid all of these problems and will be familiar with how to use one when it becomes time for testing. By donating to our project, you will not only help provide necessary materials for my students, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement! Students will be able to simply focus on the academic material at hand, and not whether their materials are going to work or not. They will feel prepared to use the calculator when it comes to the test, and they will be tested on whether or not they know how the content, not on whether or not they know how to use the calculator.
