Our goal in the Trauma Sensitive Team is to cultivate a culture and an understanding of the practices that advance a compassionate, respectful, and safe environment for all students, with growing awareness and sensitivity to students with special circumstances or trauma in their lives. We would like to develop effective methods and opportunities to foster a shared vision with our staff and implement those practices within our school. One of the ways we are becoming more trauma sensitive is by creating a “Peaceful Place” in each classroom. This is a place where children can go to calm down when they are feeling upset and unable to focus on the activity at hand. We are doing this because being able to self-regulate is critical to a person’s ability to access their thinking brain, restrain unwanted behaviors in and out of the classroom, and attend to the learning at hand. In order for the “Peaceful Place” to be successful, we need it to be consistent throughout the school so that the students know how to appropriately access it and the materials included. We also need to include materials that will make a diverse group of students feel comfortable. We would like to provide each classroom with a beanbag chair, noise cancelling headphones, stress balls, and sensory and yoga tools. By creating a “Peaceful Place” and teaching children how to use it, they can learn how to self-regulate and become more available and more successful during classroom activities as well as in their everyday lives.
