My students are 7th graders that are at reading levels that range from 2nd grade through 9th. Many students come from low to no income families and are of Hispanic and African American heritage. Our school is K-8 with 99% of our students receiving free lunch. Our students are faced with gang activity, drugs, prostitution and murder. Reading allows students to leave where they are and enter a place that has no cares or worries. Giving them the chance to experience people and places that they may never get to see.
