One thing I've learned in my years of teaching is that no matter how energetic the teacher is, how engaging the lesson is, or how fun the activity is, there are just some students that cannot focus sitting in a chair at a desk and working. This means, for me as a teacher, I'm not only trying to teach the standard, but teach how to sit still in a chair and learn or work. My students need to have the power to choose how they learn and work best. I'm asking for a variety of research-based seats for the classroom where my students can choose to work where they do their best learning; whether it be on an exercise ball, a wobble stool, a bungee chair, a scoop rocker, or just a cushion on the floor. Research shows seating that allows for slight movement of the body helps students focus on what they are doing, especially hyperactive students. Without the hindrance of where or how a student sits in my classroom, I am convinced that my students will make more academic gains than ever and additionally take responsibility for their choices.
