One of the major focuses of the first grade social studies standards is comparing today to long ago. Visiting the train museum is an authentic way for the students to experience "long ago" by riding on a historical train while learning about how people traveled and worked in the past. The train guides explain the history of the train route and the part it played in the local economy. After taking the educational train ride, the students will tour the museum grounds which includes a variety of train cars the students can walk through, including mail, dining, and sleeping cars.
