Popular in Europe for about 50 years, nature-based early childhood education is now finding its way to enriching the development of young learners in the U.S. As I've begun to introduce elements of the "forest school" model to my first grade students, the reception has been extraordinary. While hiking in the woods my students have found frogs, snakes, newts, myriad insects and birds...and each discovery has led to an authentic, child-initiated research project that ultimately streams directly into the first grade standards of reading, writing and scientific inquiry. Through our outdoor exploration, students have also taken risks, witnessed cause and effect, supported one another, become more resourceful, listened carefully, breathed deeply, engaged their senses, and developed a passion for their local environment. The students and I are eager to pursue this ages-old way of learning: spending time outside. Thank you!
