All readers on board! In a typical public high school, in one of the poorest neighborhoods of our city, you are likely to find that more than half of the students are reading below grade level. I teach in a place like that where my students enter high school with an average of 3 year deficiency in their reading skills. My job as their ninth grade English teacher is to help them decrease the gap in any way I can to get them on the path to college.
