I am in California serving a population of wonderful students and families that come from all over the world. They are learning to read in a supportive, caring, and structured environment. They are sponges at this age, and really love to read nonfiction about people, science, and social studies. They love sharing facts, and taking what they learn from books to their journal and writing about them. Unfortunately many nonfiction books currently in our classroom are at too high of a level and not accessible to first graders.
