I have been a teacher for 9 years. Each year I try to challenge myself to reflect and make my craft better and more efficient. Working together with other adults and classmates is an area I wanted to improve upon. Making appropriate space for collaboration was my focus. My teaching philosophy changed greatly, when my life changed. My own kindergarten child was diagnosed with ADHD. I began researching ways for him to get movement throughout the day, in his own kindergarten classroom. Then I had an "ah ha" moment. I began to think about my students. I recalled my students that constantly tip back on their chair, wiggle around on the floor when working with others, and just plain stand at their desks during work time. I needed to incorporate more movement throughout the entire day, whether they were special needs or not. It was now my job to create spaces where students could continue to collaborate, along with getting their movement needs met. Things like lap desks, wobble chairs, bean bags, clipboards, stability balls, and wobble cushions allow children to make choices about where to work in the classroom, based on their individual needs. These spaces will allow students to focus on their tasks, increase core strength, make smart choices about what their bodies need and get them ready for the 21st century of learning.
