News articles about what is happening in the real word are never-ending in my reading class. However, those are easily attainable and ever-changing. As a common theme in our world is "acceptance," students need to hear a handful of stories about perception and being different. Our main issues in this world have a lot to do with who we are as HUMANS. If a child can make a thematic connection with a fictional story and a real world news article, transforming into a better person becomes second nature. And that's what we want for our future, isn't it? More good-hearted people. My students thrive off of classroom discussions and storytelling. When we read together, we gain more knowledge than I can describe. For the past two years, these kids have taken themes and ideas from every book we've read and applied to it to their lives and the world around them. They are developing like wildfire, but they need more. No one wants to read the same book over and over again (unless it's Harry Potter). Having just me as their reading coach, they need more class sets. Class sets are so vital to a students growth and conversation. Students are reading together, sharing ideas, and hanging onto plot twists every day.
