Arriving from another country and entering high school is a very difficult transition to make because you not only need to learn a new language but also apply that language to advanced academic thinking. Our students are coming to us from refugee camps, war torn countries and other unfortunate circumstances where school has often not been accessible or a high priority. Many of them have had interrupted or limited education and are not accustomed to the routines and expectations of American public high schools. Not only our students learning a new language, they are also expected to participate in classroom conversations and activities that utilize academic vocabulary as well as higher order thinking skills that they are not accustomed to.
The most important thing is providing materials. When routines and expectations are predictable students are better able to adapt easily and quickly. Our project will integrate consistent routines and materials in every class they take. Teachers are collaborating to make our language, content expectations in our classrooms consistent and easy to follow and we have seen that ELL student engagement has gone up but due to their circumstances many students do not have the materials they need to engage as effectively as possible. To encourage our students in their learning process they need each student at the beginning of the year will receive a notebook that will be used as an interactive notebook during the year. Each student will receive a pocket file that will be used to organize the paper communication between the school and home. The other materials will be used by the students in the classroom projects.
To have basic materials available to them. This project will supply each student with the basic materials they need to be prepared for success! Please consider donating to our project.
