Our school receives limited funding for experimentation and classroom supplies. To be able to provide the students with a hands-on opportunity to recreate an ecosystem model kit where they can actually SEE changes as they work through it, would be an indescribable benefit to their learning. The students (in 6 periods) will work in small groups to solidify their understanding of biodiversity in different marine ecosystems. Grouping students together is a great way to help them learn teamwork and sharing responsibilities while also exploring the content from a hands-on perspective. They will be responsible for pre-lab research, the experiment itself and post-lab follow-up that will not only assess their understanding but also utilize writing across the curriculum.
