My district has read the same boring texts every single year for who knows how long because no one has been able to get funding for new, exciting literature. My students complain about the one-dimensional experiences that seem to be covered in many of the books chosen by the school. This coming year, I've been given the freedom to choose new books, if I can provide them. So here I am using my voice to advocate on the behalf of my students who deserve so much more than they've been given. These books aren't just going to be used to help them develop English skills, but also to provide them with historical knowledge and societal competency that can be used on their state US History exam and life after high school. These books are incredibly vital to providing my students with the high level of rigor and social awareness many previous teachers have failed to provide. With only a year before they enter college and/ or careers, my students need to develop the ability to analyze high level texts and critically think about the issues discussed within them in order to navigate the setbacks and experiences that lie before them.
